Basalt Neurologist Receives National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society’s MS Partner in Care Designation

October 21, 2014

DENVER – Dr. Alison “Brooke” Allen, neurologist and owner of Roaring Fork Neurology, PC and Mountain Neurological Research Center in Basalt, Colo. has been designated a Partner in MS Care- Neurologic Care by the National MS Society.  This designation recognizes exceptional commitment to MS patient care and the need for patients to have access to a neurologist with current knowledge and experience treating MS. Allen is the first physician in the Colorado-Wyoming Chapter area to attain this recognition and is the Society’s first Partner in MS Care on the Western Slope.

Program partners include health care professionals in the areas of neurology, mental heath and rehabilitation, in addition to health centers that provide multi-disciplinary health care.  Partners have demonstrated knowledge and experience in MS care and have a special interest in treating people living with this disease that attacks the central nervous system, impacting vision, cognition and mobility, depending on where the nerve damage occurs.

The Society’s Partner in MS Care program also supports Society’s conviction that optimal MS care is delivered and supported when strong collaborative relationships exist between all health care providers who are involved in the care and treatment of the individual living with MS and the Society.

“We are pleased that Dr. Allen has received this designation,” said Colorado-Wyoming Chapter President Carrie Nolan. “MS is a complex disease and her expertise, combined with the comprehensive treatment approach she provides to her patients, is exemplary. Dr. Allen looks at all issues, such as general health, chronic MS symptoms, fatigue, pain and cognition, and will make referrals to the Chapter to ensure that the patient receives the help and resources needed in areas such as financial counseling, education, and connections to additional community services.  Having her expertise available to patients in Basalt and surrounding communities, and on the Western Slope is an invaluable asset,” Nolan added.

Allen serves on the Chapter’s board of trustees and is a member of the Chapter’s Clinical Advisory Committee, where she works to improve health care for individuals living with MS in rural areas of Colorado and Wyoming.   She participates in patient education programs, has made presentations about MS diagnosis and treatment to physicians in the Roaring Fork Valley, and is a supporter of the Chapter’s Western Slope Walk MS and Hike MS, and other fundraising events, including the Aspen Town ‘n’ Trail 10K run.

Allen opened her neurology practice in 2010 and has partnered with allied professionals including a nutritionist, physical therapist and a local mental health specialist to address the complex and diverse needs of MS patients.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
