DENVER (September 21, 2016) – The Colorado-Wyoming Chapter, National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society honored Mary Rhinehart, president and CEO of Johns Manville, with its Spirit Award in front of a crowd of nearly 500 on September 15 during its MS On the Move Luncheon held at the Westin Downtown Denver.  This award is presented annually in recognition of service to the MS community, and contributions to society and the common good.

“The Chapter is extremely honored to recognize Mary for her leadership, generosity and support,” said Chapter President Carrie Nolan. “Her outstanding contributions have made, and will continue to make, a significant impact.”

Rhinehart has participated in Bike MS Colorado since 2012 and has been instrumental in helping Johns Manville’s 100-member Bike MS team raise more than $500,000 in support of people living with MS. She is one of the company’s internal champions behind the tremendous fundraising efforts and growth of Team JM, which raised more than $100,000 during the Chapter’s 2016 Bike MS Colorado ride. Additionally, for 20 years Johns Manville has run a popular rest stop for the 3,000 cyclists who participate in Bike MS Colorado.

“We have a strong desire at JM to give back to the communities we live in and promote health and wellness in our workforce,” Rhinehart said. “This award is reflective of the passion our employees, family members, customers and suppliers have toward supporting those who live with MS and for ending this disease.”

Rhinehart received her B.S. degree in finance cum laude from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and an MBA from the University of Denver. She is an active community member and serves on several boards including University of Colorado Health Systems, CoBiz Financial and Ply Gem Industries Inc. She is on the Executive Committee for the Policy Advisory Board of the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies and she is a member of the International Women’s Forum, The Colorado Forum and C200. Rhinehart has also been honored with several prestigious recognitions, including the Alumni Service Award from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado, was named Woman of the Year by Women’s Vision Foundation and named CFO of the Year by the Denver Business Journal.

Rhinehart joins previous Spirit Award recipients Michael King corporate and securities attorney, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP; Marc Spritzer, director of CoBiz Advisors; and Dick Kelly, former CEO and board chair of Xcel Energy, and his wife Robin Kelly.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
