Bike MS Colorado presented by Point B Slated for June 27 - 28

April 8, 2015

DENVER –The Colorado-Wyoming Chapter, National MS Society’s Bike MS, presented by Point B is set to roll on June 27 – 28.  On that weekend, 3,000 cyclists will take on a two-day, 134 -199-mile adventure ride along the Front Range from Westminster to Fort Collins and back, as they pedal to raise more than $4 million to support Chapter programs and resources, and research to end the mysteries that still surround this disease that targets the central nervous system, causing loss of mobility.

“Reaching 30 years is a major milestone, ” said Kristin Gibbs, vice president of development for the Chapter.  “This is a time to celebrate the significant progress that has been made since the inception of Bike MS. In 1986 there were no treatments for MS and even diagnosing the disease was a challenge. Today we have 12, FDA-approved treatments, including three oral therapies, for remitting MS, the most common form of the disease. Diagnostic tools such as the MRI that we take for granted today, also became available during this time, allowing for earlier intervention and support.

“While it is rewarding to look back and see how much progress has occurred during the past three decades, there are still many challenges ahead,” Gibbs continued.  “The cause and cure remain unknown, and there are no treatments for progressive MS, which unlike the remitting form of the disease that comes and goes, causes a progressive, non-reversible decline and loss of mobility.  Funds raised by the generous support our cyclists and community members allow us to contribute to the Society’s 380 projects currently taking place worldwide, including the research work of the International Progressive MS Alliance, which represents the first time MS Society’s around the globe are funding research together. Looking ahead, we are committed to continuing the momentum that has taken us this far as we now focus on stopping progressive MS, reversing damage caused by MS, and finding a cure to end MS forever,” she emphasized.

Strong support has made Bike MS Colorado the National MS Society’s third largest fundraising ride in the nation.  Last year’s ride broke former fundraising records, topping more than $4 million.  This year riders hope to repeat – and possibly top  - that feat.

Registration has taken place in flights this year and is now open for the final 1,000 slots.  For supporters who want to be part of Bike MS, but prefer a shorter ride, the Chapter offers a one-day ride featuring a commemorative 30-mile course or a 50-mile loop ride around Fort Collins on Saturday, June 27.  Supporters can also take part by riding ‘virtually.’  To register or to make a donation, visit www.bikeMScolorado.org.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
