September 9, 2011

Generously funded by the Hayley's Hope and Michaela's Miracle MS Memorial Fund.

The 2011 MS Family Discovery weekend was held July 9 and 10, in the Mystic area. 200 people, ranging from grandparents to grandchildren, attended the program, all of whom have a member of their family that is affected by multiple sclerosis.

MS Family Discovery Weekend is a bi-annual program that promotes communication and overall wellness for families with someone who lives with multiple sclerosis. This year’s MS Family Discovery Weekend featured an educational workshop with clinical psychologist Paul Reid, Psy. D., and an art therapy breakout session for the children at the Mystic Marriott in Groton, followed by a field trip to Mystic Aquarium, which included lunch and a penguin encounter. After the trip to the aquarium, attendees returned to the Mystic Marriott and could choose between family free time, a Caregivers’ Meeting, a breakout session with Paul Reid, or family movie night with ice cream sundaes.

This year’s program was generously funded by the Hayley’s Hope and Michaela’s Miracle MS Memorial Fund.

About the Connecticut-Rhode Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society

The Connecticut Chapter strives to provide knowledge and assistance to help people with MS and their families maintain the highest possible quality of life. These goals are achieved through vital national and local programs.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
