Newington’s Raymour & Flanigan Joins The Fight

June 16, 2014

NEWINGTON, Conn. – With a team of dedicated employees and a mission to give back to the local community, Newington’s Raymour and Flanigan is stepping up to join the fight against multiple sclerosis.

On Saturday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the furniture store will host its first ever Connecticut Fights MS event to raise donations for the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter, and ultimately, help find a cure for MS.

"It is important to get involved with the community and help give back, but this event is going to be very special to us, as we also have a connection to this disease," said Christopher Roy, store manager at Newington’s Raymour and Flanigan. "I look forward to having a lot of fun with our guests and getting to know our new partners from the National MS society."

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system affecting roughly 6,000 Connecticut residents. The cause is unknown and there is currently no cure for MS. Symptoms can include, among other things, numbness in the limbs, difficulties with vision and speech, stiffness, loss of mobility and, in some more severe cases, total paralysis.

During the Connecticut Fights MS event, guests can make a donation and enter to win one of the many gift baskets available, all provided by local businesses and the Raymour & Flanigan team. All proceeds from the event will benefit the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter.

"Events such as this one not only help us raise funds to fight MS, but also help us raise awareness about what MS is," said Kara Preston, vice president of development and strategic partnerships for the Connecticut Chapter. "Every connection in our community counts."

Newington’s Raymour & Flanigan Furniture store is located at 3375 Berlin Turnpike, in Newington.

About the Connecticut-Rhode Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society

The Connecticut Chapter strives to provide knowledge and assistance to help people with MS and their families maintain the highest possible quality of life. These goals are achieved through vital national and local programs.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
