STAMFORD, Conn. – On the road through life, we all experience an "awakening" of some kind. Whether it be a bend in taste, a slight step toward maturation, a shift in career path, or something more severe, awakenings induce change and adaptation. Often times these changes come with periods of uncertainty and risk. But with risk comes strength, and with that strength, we have the ability to be present - to be awakened.

The public is invited to attend "AWAKE," a gallery event to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter. The night will feature artwork from John Freeman, Christa Forrest, Kathy Chattoraj, Liz Squillace, Tucker Blanford and Ellen Brown Gordon, as well as live performances from Christina Mae, GRANATA and Dj Kojo.

This event is not only an exploration of this human experience as an artist or a musician, but a night to honor those bound with the strength and courage to fight the uphill battle against diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

More than 6,500 Connecticut residents live with multiple sclerosis, a potentially debilitating disease. The cause is unknown and there is currently no cure. Symptoms can include numbness in the limbs, difficulties with vision and speech, stiffness, loss of mobility and, in some more severe cases, total paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted.

The event will be held on the Thursday, September 17, from 6 to10 p.m. at 110 Harbor Point Road in Stamford. There will be food, drinks, artwork for sale and a raffle with great prizes from local sponsors. There is a $10 suggested donation for entry. Fifty percent of all art sales will be donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, as well as 100 percent of door donations and proceeds from raffle sales.

Funds raised through events such as this ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents affected by MS

About the Connecticut-Rhode Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society

The Connecticut Chapter strives to provide knowledge and assistance to help people with MS and their families maintain the highest possible quality of life. These goals are achieved through vital national and local programs.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide.
