Holly Zissman recently finished her time as an intern with the National MS Society, Greater Illinois Chapter. A native of Algonquin, IL, she is graduating this May from Loyola University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations. Holly started her internship in January of 2014, and worked closely with the Volunteer Development team on many projects.
“Mainly, I’ve been recruiting volunteers for our events,” said Holly. “If they have any questions, I’m there to answer. I also go to fairs and expos to spread the word about our volunteer opportunities and educate people about the Society’s mission.”
As a volunteer with other organizations, Holly recognizes that the way to keep volunteers engaged is by building excitement for the event they will be helping at. With this in mind, she keeps up a positive attitude in all of her recruitment efforts. As an administrator of the MS Greater IL Volunteer Facebook group, she engages with members and thanks them for their efforts on a daily basis. Her passion for the cause is always at the forefront of her messages.
“If you’re looking for a fulfilling, enjoyable volunteer experience, this is definitely where you’ll find it,” she said. “I’ve done a lot of volunteering over the years, but the National MS Society is, without a doubt, the best organization I’ve ever worked with. Everyone here really cares about our mission and the people we help, and it shows in the events we hold.”
Holly plans on coming back to the volunteer with the Society whenever possible. In the meantime, her internship with the Society has helped to cement her plans for the future.
“I’ve had so much fun at the Society that I’ll be looking for a full time position with another non-profit,” she said. “Hopefully, I’ll find one where I can help to plan events like Walk MS!”
