Karen King

You name the MS Society event – Karen King has been there. Having volunteered with the National MS Society for over 12 years, Karen has been instrumental in the success of events such as Walk MS, Bike MS, MS Slugfest, Half Court Classic, and the Research Symposium. She also served on this year’s Bike MS Volunteer Committee to recruit participants and sponsors.

In addition to volunteering at various MS Society events, Karen also serves as an MS Activist. This past spring she traveled with other volunteers and staff to Springfield and lobbied Illinois Senators and Representatives for important legislation benefiting people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Karen certainly keeps herself busy. Alongside her husband, Chuck King (Everyday Hero in January 2013), she also volunteers at the Brookfield Zoo twice a week. Despite her busy schedule, Karen says she’s continually inspired to help because as a person living with MS she feels the “need to give back and hopefully help others.” She says she does so “by being there with a good ear for listening, provide some common sense measures to help them along their journey, help educate those with MS and more importantly to help educate those without it.”

Karen believes her contributions have been rewarding for others and for herself as well. “It is so rewarding to give your time to such a worthy cause,’” she says. “It doesn’t take much and I’m all the better for it.”
