Intern Position

Title: Kansas Advocacy Intern
Immediate Supervisor: Community Development Manager, Wichita Kansas
Classification: Intern (non-paid)
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Senior Community Development & Advocacy Manager, the Intern has responsibility for researching advocacy issues, identifying community partners, data entry/management related to advocacy, caucus training assistance, coordinating August congressional recess visits 
Position Responsibilities:
  1. Learn status of MS Society advocacy programs, KS Government Relations Committee (GRC), Kansas MS Caucus and data management system for our chapter
  2. Schedule in district appointments for small groups of volunteer activists to meet with legislators for during August congressional recess.
  3. Following a timeline and incorporating identified content, coordinate MS Caucus training for legislators to be scheduled sometime during June 2015.
  4. Attend GRC meetings and MS Caucus trainings via teleconference.
  5. Enter information from August recess visits into existing tracking tools and our data management system.
  6. Team Player – Works cooperatively and effectively within the office to assist the MS Society in achieving its mission.  Demonstrates initiative, enthusiasm, willingness and works collaboratively with staff and volunteers to achieve the overall goals and objectives.
Job Requirements:
  1. Pursuing a degree in Public Policy, Health, or a related field preferred.
  2. Ability to effectively work on many complex projects simultaneously. Ability to prioritize.
  3. Strong organizational and planning skills, detail-oriented and able to work independently.
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  5. Must have own means of transportation and be willing to travel locally, if needed.

Title: Summer 2014 Bike MS Training Ride and Event Planning Coordinator  
Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with team captains and local bike shops to organize a training ride schedule for Bike MS Wichita
  • Attend training rides some weekends to offer help and support to cyclists
  • Assist with event planning and securing logistics for Bike MS
  • Assist with local marketing and cultivation of new riders for Wichita’s Bike MS
  • Various administrative duties/data entry as needed.  
Initial Impact:
  • Assist with planning and coordination of Wichita’s Autumn Trails Bike MS event to be held in Pratt, KS on September 6th & 7th
  • Provide a quality training experience and enhanced knowledge about Bike MS for riders of Wichita’s Bike MS 2014
  • Provide educational and connectional opportunities with MS Society constituents in Wichita area through training ride events
  • Increase the number of participants for Wichita Bike MS 2014
Sustained Outcomes:
  • Success in helping to make Wichita’s Bike MS 2014 the biggest and most FUN event in the ride’s history!
  • Success at better training and cultivating our Bike MS riders
  • Collaboration with local businesses, sponsors and volunteers to promote awareness about Bike MS with result of increasing participation by 10%
  • General programs promotion and awareness around Central and Western Kansas
Training and Support:
Initial volunteer orientation is provided.  Overview of basic office equipment required to perform this position.  Overview of event logistics. Overview of training ride proposal. Ongoing feedback and training is available from supervisor, Senior Manager of Community Development and Advocacy, Kari Rinker and also from Development Manager, Kim Bush. 
Office hours are Monday thru Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; 15-20 hours per week (hours volunteered and day of the week are flexible and based upon assignments and volunteer availability).
