Why did you decide to participate in Walk MS?
I decided to participate in Walk MS because I was asked by Sally Columbus and couldn't say "no" to her!
What’s your favorite thing about Walk MS?
My favorite thing about Walk MS is that it helps to create awareness about MS.
How many years have you participated in the event?
I have not been able to actively participate in Walk MS. My wife and daughter pushed me one year, but I have supported other walkers financially for the many years.
What are a few things you wish people understood about multiple sclerosis?
I would like people to be made more aware of what MS is and how people are affected by it. I especially want people to know how differently each person is affected by it. Just because I am totally immobile does not mean that everyone with MS will end up like me.
What makes you a great Walk MS Ambassador?
I enjoy people and have a positive outlook on life, despite living with MS for many years.
What makes your MS story unique?
I think everyone with MS has a unique story, because as I mentioned earlier, MS is unpredictable, and there is no way of knowing how you will be affected. Some people are mildly affected, and others, like me, are greatly effected by it. I have never met someone who is affected in the same way I have been, and I'm sure that would be the same for most people living with MS. I might be unique because of the fact that I've had MS for 35 years and have managed to maintain a positive outlook and live a very full life in spite of my MS. Because my MS is chronic and progressive, it was initially a slow process, and I managed to continue working for 20 years after being diagnosed. Even though I've been totally immobile for 15 years, I have a great support system and am following my seven grandchildren in all their activities. I have been blessed with a wonderful family, many beautiful friends and a church where my relationship with God has deepened over the years, and I've been given the grace I've needed to deal with all my challenges on a daily basis.
