In some ways, Nicole Lemelle considers herself lucky. Living with a chronic disease is costly and can wreck havoc on a person's finances. Thankfully, Nicole has good insurance coverage and is able to manage the costs of healthcare and prescriptions without much trouble. Quickly after becoming involved with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, she realized others living with MS were not necessarily so lucky and made a decision to use her voice and talents to advocate on their behalf.
As a member of the Government Relations Committee, Nicole has built solid relationships with elected officials and represents the MS Society and the MS community in a number of ways:
Attended the Louisiana Public Policy Conference each year from 2011-2014
Assists the Diversity and Clinical Outreach team at the 2013 National Black Nurses Association Conference
Lobbied to pass Louisiana House Bill 345/Prescription Drug Coverage and the expansion of the Medicaid program
Featured as an inaugural contributor for the launch of the National MS Society blog and her image and quotes are used in promotional materials
Often serves as a guest speaker for MS self-help and support groups
Nationally recognized as a top blogger for the MS community, Nicole does all she can do to educate people about multiple sclerosis, while reassuring and inspiring those living with MS to seize command of their own lives and to be their own advocate.
Through her blog, www.mynewnormals.com, Nicole interacts and connects with thousands of people in the MS community. Her blog provides a platform for those people to connect with others, find resources and directs them to the National MS Society's website for information on research, programs and services.
Nicole's efforts on behalf of those living with MS and our organization are true testaments to her dedication to advocacy and proof that connections count. We thank Nicole for helping to guide others along their MS journey and for leading them to the MS Society.
