Lisa and Mark Mayeaux’s involvement with the National MS Society began due to Hurricane Katrina.
The devastating storm impacted many volunteers who were scheduled to assist with a Bike MS: Louisiana
training ride. Lisa’s sister, a volunteer, put out a call for help to her friends and family. After
spending a morning with cyclists and other hard-working volunteers, Lisa and Mark were hooked and
they signed up as a SAG vehicle team for Bike MS: Louisiana in 2006. Prior to that event weekend,
Lisa and Mark didn’t know much about MS and had no personal connection. However, by the end of the
weekend they knew the MS cause was one they needed to support.

After the event, they jumped at the opportunity to join the Bike MS planning committee with the
goal to help bring the event back to its pre-Hurricane Katrina fundraising and participation. They
even breathed new life into the storm-damaged balloon arch for the Start/Finish line.

Soon, they were volunteering in nearly all of the Louisiana fundraising events: Walk MS, A Vintage
Affair (formerly Renaissance Party) while continuing to serve on the Bike planning committee.
Feeling they still weren’t giving all they could and despite not owning their own bicycles, the
couple formed Team Angel and registered to ride.

Mark and Lisa’s accomplishments toward creating a world free of MS include:

  • Leading logistical efforts for Bike MS: Louisiana, including planning and overseeing thevictory party atPercy Quin State Park
  • Assisting with packet pick-ups and training rides
  • Assisting with the set-up of Walk MS events
  • Assisting with registration at A Vintage Affair and serving on the planning committee
  • Named Top Volunteers for 2008
  • Collectively raising nearly $17,000 for MS research, programs and services

The couple recently had the opportunity to attend a Get Connected event and referred to the
experience “magical.” Lisa and Mark have gone from joining our volunteer army with little knowledge
of MS and no personal connection, to committed supporters and fundraisers with a full understanding
of the effects of MS and a passion to helping all those impacted by it. They plan to continue that
support until a cure is found for those they’ve come to know and care about through their involvement.
