When Breanne Machacek’s parents explained to the young girl that her mother had MS, Breanne believed it was something as simple as a tummy ache that could go away with a little medicine. As she grew older, Breanne began to understand the enormity of the disease. “Multiple sclerosis is a mean, invisible monster: A monster that lives in my house and attacks my mom every day,” she says. “This monster crawls in her head and whispers ‘just give up, you can’t do it.’” But Breanne has promised to battle this monster alongside her mother, and has done so the past few years even while balancing schoolwork and volleyball at Deer Park High School. For the next phase of her life, she hopes to make her mother proud as she attends Northwood University in Florida to obtain her Bachelor’s in marketing. Breanne then plans to partner with her mother to open a tea room and bakery. “I know it will make her so happy, and I told her I would make it wheelchair accessible.”
