Multiple sclerosis has been a part of Savannah’s life as far as she can remember, but it wasn’t until she was nine years old and her mother had a seizure that the disease was brought to the forefront of their family’s life. Her mother was diagnosed with MS in 1991, and in 2006 the disease progressed. Savannah helped her family however she could with jobs and chores while still focusing on school. During her junior and senior years of high school, Savannah took additional classes at Trinity Valley Community College. As a student, Savannah was involved in high school band, receiving honors in the solo and ensemble competition. Her perseverance allowed her to graduate Westwood High School in 2015. She plans to attend Sam Houston State University and pursue a master’s degree in English. “With this scholarship, I can achieve my goals,” says Savannah. She wants to become a high school English teacher like her mother and change students’ lives. Through everything, Savannah believes that MS has brought her family closer.
