Steven Bosmans’ mother was diagnosed with MS in 2003, leading Steven on a path to activism and community involvement after noticing the lack of awareness regarding this disease. This student from William J. Brennan High School used his extra time to talk to small groups throughout San Antonio about MS and its impact on a family. Eventually, Steven’s voice reached far beyond these small groups when he went to the mayor’s office and also spoke to Texas congressmen and senators. He credits his advocacy efforts to watching his mother refuse to give in to her disease. Now, Stephen is taking a different approach to help people with MS as he pursues a degree in musical performance. The creative student hopes to create therapy through music to help ease the pain of people with MS and other neurological disorders. “If my mother was never diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, my life and aspirations would be dramatically altered and I wouldn’t have the drive and inspiration I have today,” Steven says.
