Project Goal:

Overall Goals for Internship Project

  • Intern will help coordinate and grow our Bike MS Champion’s Program
  • Intern will help recruit, coordinate and manage event volunteers for Bike MS: Cactus & Crude

Measurable Results Intern will need to achieve

  • Intern will need to help make at least 5 new “connections” between a Champion and a cyclist.  By growing out Bike MS Champions program, the intern is helping “connect” cyclist to our mission, therefor enhancing the cyclist experience and motivating them to raise more funds.
  • Intern will need to recruit 2 new groups to help volunteer for Bike MS: Cactus & Crude. They will work with the Development Associate and Bike MS committee to establish what areas and how many volunteers will be needed during the weekend of Cactus & Crude. 

Learning Objectives

  • Communicate and market Champions program to persons living with MS and Bike MS cyclists
  • Work with Champions program to better connect cyclist/teams to the mission and “Why we ride.”
  • Coordinate Champions program participant interaction during Bike MS weekend
  • Coordinate (1-2) Champions program social
  • Assist with recruiting event volunteers
  • Assist with coordinating event volunteers, including day-of event scheduling, conducting pre-event background checks when required and assisting with pre-event training and safety communications.
  • Manage event volunteer schedules during Bike MS weekend and work with Development Manager & Development Associate to troubleshoot any problems or deficiencies, ensuring a smooth event for our participants.
  • Develop all related communications and content for e-newsletters, mailings and other volunteer communications, as needed.
  • Create and send thank you communications to Champions participants and event volunteers after the event.

Required Skills

  • Must be an independent worker and thinker who can take a task and make it their own.
  • Confidence! Student must be able to communicate, interact and develop relationships with Champions, cyclist and volunteers.
  • Have strong written and speaking skills.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must be proficient in Word and  be able to utilize basic spreadsheet documents
  • Creativity
  • Energy! This position requires someone who can be a cheerleader for our volunteers and help push our cyclist to make a “connection”
  • Must be able to be present for all of Bike MS weekend, Friday through Monday, July 18,19, 20,  and 21.

Educational Value

Training and Support

  • Intern will undergo required NMSS trainings, introducing them to the Society and our best practices (customer service, risk management and Convio database training)
  • Intern will be provided with all volunteer data from previous year necessary to adequately plan and strategize approach.
  • Intern will be provided with current connections between Champions and cyclist.
  • Intern will work closely with Development Manager on all areas of project and with Development Associate on some areas, as well.
  • Intern will meet with development manager once per week to monitor goals and progress and strategize further steps.
  • Development manager will facilitate introductions between Bike MS committee and current Champions.
  • Intern is provided a laptop to use during the duration of the internship.

Time Commitment

  • May 19  through August 15, 2014
  • Requires approximately 15-20 hours per week, with flexible hours dependent on student class schedule.
