About This Issue

Respite care offers short-term help to give family caregivers a break from the stress of providing care. It is vital to helping caregivers maintain their health and it bolsters family stability. We support the Virginia Lifespan Respite Voucher Program and we seek new resources and opportunities to grow and strengthen the program so that more families can receive the assistance they need. This innovative program provided reimbursement vouchers up to $400 to home-based caregivers to cover the cost of temporary and short-term respite. Funds for the program were exhausted in 6 months, serving 517 families across 150 localities. We are asking the Virginia State Legislature to provide $800,000 in funding to sustain the program for Fiscal Years 2015 and 2016.
