Venoco Supports Bike MS
Ten years ago, a group of employees from Venoco, Inc. joined the Bike MS Southern California Ride because they were committed cyclists and thought MS was a worthy cause. Since that time, the partnership between the Venoco and the National MS Society continues to evolve.
Venoco founder Tim Marquez founded the oil and gas production company in 1992. Community Relations Coordinator Marybeth Carty said, “Part of our company culture is to give back to the communities in which we operate and our employees live.” Venoco is recognized in the community as a corporate leader in philanthropy and social responsibility. In the last decade Venoco has donated $150,000 to the National MS Society, in addition to what employees, their family and friends raise each year as part of Venoco’s Bike MS team.
“We believe in the work that the National MS Society is doing for the benefit of our community in supporting wellness and offering services to those affected by MS, especially young people,” said Carty. A few Venoco employees have been diagnosed with MS since the company first got involved. She continued, “This disease has touched all of us in some way. We can empathize with the hurdles people with MS must overcome. We’re happy to do our part to help make the journey more comfortable.”
Venoco is a presenting sponsor for the Bike MS Ride in Ventura on October 3 & 4, 2009. A team of 36 Venoco employees and friends will be cycling and has already raised over $8,000. For the 8th time, Venoco employees will also man a Hawaiian-themed rest stop on the route.
More than 1,500 cyclists are expected to come out and help raise the goal of $1.26 million. Funds raised will support direct services for the more than 14,500 Southern and Central Californians living with MS and their families and national MS research to find a cure for this chronic disease of the central nervous system.
Bike MS is Southern California’s premier cycling event. We have route options for every level of cyclist — from 15 miles on one day up to 160 miles over two days. Beginner to veteran riders will explore Southern California’s most picturesque areas on their bikes.
All cyclists enjoy delicious meals and solid support, with rest stops every 15 miles and SAG vehicles along the route. A fantastic festival awaits riders on Saturday afternoon with great food, music, a beer garden, massage tent and fun activities. Most importantly, participants will not only get an unforgettable weekend, but a chance to make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. Monies raised support education, advocacy, research and local programs that enhance the quality of life for people with MS and their families.
There is still time to register! People can participate in Bike MS individually or as a team. Volunteers are also needed!
