Partners in Care: Mary's story

Mary is a 26 year old woman who has been living with MS for about 5 years. She is married and recently had a baby. During her pregnancy, Mary experienced very few MS symptoms. After the birth of her child, Mary began having more serious symptoms, such as vision problems, extreme fatigue and mild cognitive problems. Mary contacted the National MS Society because she was frustrated and scared about being able to manage her household and care for her new baby with these issues.

Experienced staff at the Chapter worked closely with Mary to help with:

  • A referral to a new neurologist who was more knowledgeable about MS than her previous doctor.

  • She was also provided with a week’s worth of home care to assist in the transition of caring for herself and her newborn while her husband went back to work, after which her mother was going to offer more time during the week to help.

  • Mary was also signed up for some local MS groups and a counselor to help her address any emotional issues while she worked through this difficult MS exacerbation.
