Helen’s Heroes MS Golf Classic Chips In Against MS
ORANGE, Conn. – The 2009 Helen’s Heroes MS Golf Classic raised $6,800 to benefit the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter and the more than 6,000 people in Connecticut living with multiple sclerosis that it serves.

East Haven resident Bob Lukaszek established the tournament for Langello, who was diagnosed with MS in 2003. This year's event raised $6,800 and the tournament has raised more than $20,000 in its history. |
“The turnout was phenomenal,” said Lukaszek, an East Haven resident. “The community came out for a great day of golf to support a truly worthy cause. My hope is that the proceeds from the Helen’s Heroes MS Golf Classic will help lead us closer to a cure.”
The third annual tournament was held Friday, June 26, at the Grassy Hill Country Club in Orange and attracted 72 golfers and more than a hundred guests for the event’s dinner.
With this year’s total, the Helen’s Heroes MS Golf Classic has now raised more than $20,000 for the Connecticut Chapter and those in Connecticut living with multiple sclerosis. Buoyed by the success, Lukaszek is already planning next year’s tournament as well as a fundraising bus trip to Mohegan Sun for later in 2009.
Lukaszek established the golf tournament in honor of his sister Helen Langello, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003.
“My sister is my best friend and the most resilient person I know,” said Lukaszek. “Her determination drives me to be the best I can in raising money and awareness to move us closer to a world free of MS.”
The cause of MS is unknown, and, as a result, there currently is no cure. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted. Funds raised through events, such as the Helen’s Heroes Golf Classic, ensure ongoing scientific research to find and cure and provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter.
The golf tournament’s contributions were recognized earlier this year when Lukaszek received the 2008 Outstanding Third Party Event by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter at its 2008 annual meeting and awards ceremony.
