Anglers Heading To Cabo To Fight MS
HARTFORD, Conn. – The tropical paradise of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico will be the site of a unique weekend fishing getaway doubling as a fundraiser for the National MS Society.
The first annual MS Cabo Challenge fishing tournament to benefit the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter will be held from Thursday, Oct. 8, to Sunday, Oct. 11, in the Mexican city known as the “marlin capital of the world.”
The event is the brainchild of Alliance Energy vice president and general manager John Gargano, who has been helping organize MS fundraisers on behalf of the company. Over the past 17 years, Alliance Energy and its employees have raised more than $1.5 million for the National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter. Gargano’s eldest daughter Rachel has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Gargano hosts an annual fishing derby every June and the MS Cabo Challenge is a new fishing tournament and vacation for local anglers.
The event itself is a two-day team tournament with points awarded for the number of marlins and other fish caught during Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10. There will be awards for the first-, second- and third-place teams and for the heaviest fish caught during the two days of competition.
In addition to the fishing tournament, the accommodations are included at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar and there will be a cocktail hour and awards banquet at its conclusion. Participants will have to provide their own travel.
Sponsorships for a full boat of five people will cost $10,000 and a single person can sign up for $2,000, with spouses welcome for $250 as a non-participant and $1,000 if they wish to fish. The sponsorships include two days of fishing, three nights at the resort, daily breakfast and the concluding awards banquet.
The goal of the tournament, according to Gargano, is to put the focus on fun while fundraising for a cause close to his heart.
To reserve a spot, please contact Amanda Camp at 203-315-7108 or e-mail acamp@allianceenergy.com.
More than 6,000 Connecticut residents live with multiple sclerosis, a potentially debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The cause is unknown and, as a result, there currently is no cure. Symptoms can include, among other things, numbness and tingling in the limbs, difficulties with vision and speech, stiffness and, in some severe cases, total paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted.
Funds raised through events like the MS Cabo Challenge ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to those in Connecticut affected by MS.
