What is Multiple Sclerosis?

User Options:

Multiple sclerosis or MS is hard to say, and even harder to live with. It is a disease of the central nervous system. Typically, it strikes adults between the ages of 20 and 50, but even children are being diagnosed with MS.

The nervous system is like a telephone line. It carries messages from the brain to the other parts of the body. MS damages the coating of the nerves, or the body’s communication system. People that have MS don’t get the right signals. They may wake up one morning and not be able to use their hands, or they may be dizzy or have trouble hearing. Simple things like waving goodbye can be hard for someone with MS. Nobody knows for sure what causes it, and there is no medicine to cure it. Scientists are working hard to try to find out why people get MS and how to cure it. That is why we need very special people like you to pitch in and raise money to help find a cure.

Right now there are more than 1,500 people in Delaware who have this disease. The money you raise by participating in the Readathon program will help pay for research and for programs that make life easier for people who are living with MS. The Mission of the National MS Society is to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. You’ll feel great knowing you can help someone else, while doing something fun - READING!
