The Ryan Todd Lacey, Youth Against MS Teen Summit

Many times multiple sclerosis dominates teenagers’ lives. Because of their age, they may need to assume adult responsibilities such as providing direct care, taking care of younger siblings, and helping to pay the bills. Instead of hanging out with friends and going to the movies, they may be taking their mother to the doctor. Instead of joining the track team, they must work in order to provide additional financial support. Many grow frustrated, angry, and ultimately resentful. Feeling alone and isolated, they do not know where to turn for support.

The Ryan Todd Lacey Foundation was established by the family of Ryan after his untimely death at the age of 21 in 2005. The family wanted Ryan’s compassion and spirit for others to live on. Ryan’s mother, Lisa, was diagnosed with aggressive multiple sclerosis at the age of 41. The affects of the disease on Ryan, 17, and his brother Christopher, 19, proved to be more damaging to the family unit than the family realized at the time.

The Ryan Todd Lacey, Youth Against MS Teen Summit is a two day weekend retreat for teens ages 13-17. Teens will have the opportunity to participate in recreational activities including archery, kayaking, and swimming. Teens also focus on learning about MS through counseling and small group activities designed to teach participants ways to better understand and cope with MS in the their family.

This year’s Youth Against MS Teen Summit will be held in August 2009. Click here for the flyer.
