African Americans and MS Mary D. Hughes, MD

Dr. Mary Hughes is Associate Professor in the Dept of Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where she also serves at the Medical Director of the Augusta MS Center. She serves on the National Board of Directors for the Society, as well as the Board of the Georgia Chapter and on their Clinical Advisory Committee as well. From 2002-2004 she received a NMSS Pilot Research Award to study African Americans with MS and published the results of that work in the journal Neurology in 2005. It is now identified through research that a gene that makes MS more severe is often found among African Americans. Dr. Hughes sister, Dora Hughes, MD, MPH has MS and is a policy advisor to President Obama.
