Gil Santos, the legendary “Voice of the New England Patriots,” and his wife, Roberta, have been selected by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to receive the MS Inspiration Award for their unwavering commitment to increasing awareness of multiple sclerosis and to building resources for MS education, support, advocacy, and research.
The award is to be presented at MileStones 2009, a fundraising gala to benefit the Society’s Central New England Chapter on March 25, 2009, at the Seaport Hotel in Boston.
Gino Cappelletti, Patriots great and Santos’ partner in the broadcast booth for 28 years, serves as MileStones Master of Ceremonies.
Dr. Peter Riskind, Director of the UMass Memorial Health Center MS Clinic, highlights research progress in prevention, treatment, and cure.
Roberta Santos was diagnosed with MS 15 years ago. A nurse for many years, she retired from nursing in 1996 after her MS symptoms required her to walk with a cane.
“[Roberta’s] mental toughness and refusal to give in to MS are inspiring to me. She has steadfastly refused to quit, and has maintained a sunny disposition through the years, despite the MS,” said Gil Santos.
MileStones proceeds help to fund cutting edge research and help provide a range of assistance to 14,000 individuals and their families who are affected by multiple sclerosis in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Among the services offered by the Chapter are help for people with MS to maintain their independence, learn strategies for managing symptoms, and access comprehensive care at affiliated clinical care centers.
