MS Buddies Peer Support Program

The MS Buddies Program links participants with volunteer "Buddies" to provide consistent, short-term, one-on-one peer support. An MS Buddy is simply someone for you to talk to who can understand what you are going through. This program is perfect for people who are newly diagnosed, or in transition who can benefit from one-on-one support as a part of their overall support system.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who Are the Members of the MS Buddies Program?
“Participants”: YOU
People living with multiple sclerosis or family members of people living with MS, who want support in a one-to-one relationship.

“Buddies”: Maine Chapter Volunteers
Volunteers who have had an MS-related experience (either have MS or are a family member or carepartner of a person with MS) who would like to provide emotional support to others who are now going through a similar experience.

What is the MS Buddies Program?
The MS Buddies Program links “Participants” with volunteer “Buddies” to provide consistent, short-term, one-on-one peer support.
It brings together those who have already dealt with complex issues surrounding MS diagnosis and coping and those who may wish to talk with someone who has “been there.”

The Participant can share his/her experience with a Buddy, who is able to listen well, empathize, acknowledge and support. The MS Buddies Program is for people who can benefit from one-on-one support as part of their overall support system.

What a Buddy Is:
Buddies primarily do three things. They serve as:
Support Person —Buddies can provide support and encouragement as a person moves through his/her MS journey.
Sounding Board —Buddies can provide a forum for information sharing and allow opportunities for Participants to talk through treatment options and other decisions.
Peer Partner —Buddies can share their own MS stories and strategies when appropriate, without giving advice.

All Buddy volunteers have completed a specialized training program and receive regular support and supervision from the Chapter program coordinator.

What A Buddy Is Not:
A Buddy is not a social worker, therapist, or crisis counselor, nor are Buddies meant to help with things like errands, grocery shopping, baby-sitting or transportation. A Buddy is simply someone for you to talk to who can understand what you are going through.
