Run to help create a world free of MS
What is Making Strides Against Multiple Sclerosis (MSAMS)?
MSAMS is a group of dedicated runners whose single cause is to free the world of MS forever through awareness and fundraising. Every dollar that MSAMS members raise goes directly to the mission and helps support the more than 18,000 people in Michigan affected by MS.
In exchange for raising funds, you will be honoring research, treatments, education, supporting clients and family members throughout Michigan. But most of all you will be moving us closer to a world free of MS forever!
Why Support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society?
The National MS Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about MS now—to move together toward a world free of multiple sclerosis. MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn't.
We help each person address the challenges of living with MS through our 50-state network of chapters. The Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward.
- We are moving research forward by relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure.
- We are moving to reach out and respond to individuals, families and communities living with multiple sclerosis.
- We are moving politicians and legislation to champion the needs of people with MS through activism, advocacy and influence.
- We are moving to mobilize the millions of people who want to do something about MS now.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Michigan Chapter is one of the largest MS Society Chapters in the country. The Michigan Chapter has identified nearly 18,000 people in Michigan with MS and supports a wide range of programs and services designed to assist people with MS to live more productive lives. These programs are developed in direct response to needs expressed by our members. The Chapter takes pride in offering important services under the direction of a caring and informed staff of professionals and volunteers.
How Do I Get Started?
First thing to do is to select a running event that is ideal and convenient for you. Traditionally, MSAMS has always used the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar International Marathon as its premier event to promote our efforts in finding a cure for MS, but the Detroit Marathon doesn’t have to be the race of your choice! Please feel free to join any run, raise funds for MS and help create a world free of MS!
Note: If you are not running in the Detroit Free Press Marathon, but would like to run and raise funds for MS please contact Liz.sawielski@mig.nmss.org or call 248-351-2190 ext. 210.
The Detroit Free Press/Flagstar International Marathon is being held this year on October 18, 2009. To register to run in the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar International Marathon, and to run with MSAMS, register directly through the Marathon Web site at www.detroitfreepressmarathon.com. Near the end of your registration process you will see two options:
- Make a one time charitable donation
- Designate a personal charity for which you would like to raise money for.
NEW! If you choose to raise money for Making Strides Against MS (MSAMS) the Free Press Marathon will automatically set you up with a fund raising page where you can send out emails and accept credit card donations online. If you have already registered to run in the Free Press Marathon, but did not chose one of the options above you can still make a difference! Click on the MSAMS Team Page (include link: http://www.active.com/donate/MSAMS) to make a one time donation or to become a MSAMS fundraiser!
