CENTRAL NC CHAPTER ANNOUNCES NEW PAVED FINISH LINE: DONATED $65,000 PROJECT
Stephanie Phipps
COMMUNITY PARTNERS DONATED MATERIALS AND LABOR VALUED AT OVER $65,000 TO PAVE ROAD TO BE NEW FINISH LINE FOR BIKE MS: BB&T TOUR TO TANGLEWOOD AND WILL BENEFIT PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE AMPHITHEATRE
Central NC Chapter of the National MS Society is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony and press conference on June 30th at 2:00pm at North Trail Road at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. The ceremony will be held to thank The Village of Clemmons, Vulcan Materials Company, Larco Construction, Thompson-Arthur Paving and Construction and other community partners as well as unveil the new Bike MS finish line to the public. MS Society board members, Bike MS committee members, staff, volunteers and community partners being recognized at the ceremony will be in attendance. The media is cordially invited to attend this event. Some of the community partners will speak and the media will have a chance for Q&A at the end.
Request for support in paving of the road was initiated by the Central North Carolina Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, who has hosted their annual Tour to Tanglewood bike ride at Tanglewood Park for the last 23 years.
Due to the renovation of the campground area, where the finish line has been traditionally held, the finish area has been relocated to the amphitheatre area off of North Trail Road. The amphitheatre space is much larger and boasts more amenities such as a concert shell, water and electricity; however, the quarter mile stretch of road on North Trail Road leading to it was crushed stone. In order for the cyclists to safely finish the event, it needed to be a paved surface.
Through the incredible generosity of The Village of Clemmons, Vulcan Materials Company, Larco Construction, Thompson-Arthur Paving and Construction and other community partners, the quarter mile stretch of road leading to the amphitheatre at Tanglewood Park has been paved. Vulcan Materials Company contributed over 800 tons of crushed stone used for the pavement foundation and for the production of the asphaltic concrete used in paving the project. Larco Construction and Thompson-Arthur Paving and Construction produced the asphaltic concrete and the Clemmons public works department supplied the personnel and equipment used in the actual paving operations
“Words cannot express how grateful we are to all of the corporations and other community partners who helped to make the project possible.” says Elizabeth Green, Chapter President for the Central NC Chapter of the National MS Society. “We are moved and humbled by their drive and the time and resources they contributed in-kind to see this project succeed. This paved portion of the road will help ensure the short and long-term health of our Bike MS campaign and will benefit everyone who utilizes the amphitheatre at Tanglewood Park. Now in its 24th year at Tanglewood Park, the Bike MS campaign is our top fundraising event and vital to enabling us to provide local programs and services as well as to support MS-related research.”, says Green.
ABOUT BIKE MS: BB&T TOUR TO TANGLEWOOD
Bike MS is one of the National MS Society’s three main charity events in addition to the MS Walk and the MS Challenge Walk. Raising over $1.12 million in 2008, this event is the Chapter’s largest fundraiser.
Last year 1,700 cyclists participated in the event, both beginners and experienced riders. The Chapter hopes to increase participation to 2,000 and donations this year to $1.2 million.
The ride is 2 days and 90 miles with shorter and century routes available and will take place on September 26th and 27th. The first leg takes place from Volvo Trucks in Greensboro to Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. The next day, cyclists ride back to cross the finish line in Greensboro.
General registration for the Tour to Tanglewood is $40 with a suggested individual fundraising goal of $200. All money raised during this event will be used by the Central North Carolina Chapter of the MS Society to help support families with MS and fund research to create a world free of MS. For more information on the ride, call (336) 299-4136 or visit the website and register online at http://bikencc.nationalmssociety.org.
ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S., and 2.5 million worldwide.
ABOUT THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY
MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn't. Our mission is to mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. We fund more MS research, provide more services to people with MS, offer more professional education and further more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world. The Society is dedicated to achieving a world free of MS. We are people who want to do something about MS now. Join the movement at nationalmssociety.org.
