Multiple Sclerosis Service Day to be Held Saturday

Liz Vinson

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -On Saturday, March 7th, the Myrtle Beach MS Service Team will be hosting MS Service Day. The MS Service Team is a group of cadets from the Carolina Forest High School NJROTC (15-18 years of age) that complete projects for people living with multiple sclerosis, in the Myrtle Beach Area. The Service Team will assist a Conway family by helping the homeowners clean out a shed and garage and installing new shelving for storage.

The NJROTC has been volunteering with the National MS Society, Mid-Atlantic Chapter for many years in the Myrtle Beach area.  The group initially volunteered at the finish line of the chapter’s 150 mile Bike MS event at Myrtle Beach High School. When the Bike MS event moved to Greenville, SC in 2008, the cadets wanted to find a new way to continue to serve the National MS Society.  The MS Service Teams were a natural fit.

Captain Ross Word, USN (Ret) and Master Chief Petty Officer William Gruber USN (Ret) provide the leadership for this outstanding group of cadets. Both have been Navy Junior ROTC instructors in Horry County, SC for the past 12 years. They try to instill in their cadets a sense of citizenship through community service. The MS Service Team are available to help with projects one Saturday each month, January-April, 2009 10:00AM – 5:00 PM.

The Service Day initiative, launched in 2007 in Charlotte, has now become part of a national pilot program nationwide for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. “One day of work really can have such a tremendous impact,” said Craig Lynch, a member of the National MS Society’s Board of Trustees and the original founder of MS Service Day. “Our volunteers help people living with MS complete tasks in and around their homes that they are physically unable to do by themselves; things we take for granted.” For more information about MS Service Day, go to www.nationalmssociety.org/ncp
