New 50-Mile Route Enhances Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride
The Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is excited to announce the addition of a 50-mile loop at the 2009 Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride scheduled for September 11-13. In previous years, the ride featured three route options: 30, 75 and 100 miles each day. There was high demand from cyclists who wanted to ride more than 30 miles, but were not ready for the 75-mile loop. The Society is pleased to offer this new route, and welcomes cyclists of all skill levels to participate.
The 50-mile route, using Craven, Jones, and Beaufort counties, is fully supported with SAGs, medical support, and 5 rest stops on Saturday and 6 on Sunday. Lunch is provided on the route both days. Over 2,500 participants are expected to attend this 21st annual event. Bike MS proceeds are used to fund research, programs, services, education and advocacy for the over 4,800 individuals living with multiple sclerosis in eastern North Carolina. This year’s fundraising goal is $1.7 million.
“Our 30-mile riders gave us great feedback on the high demand for a 50-mile route option,” says Haley Transou, Bike MS coordinator. “We are excited about this popular addition and hope to see the streets lined with residents cheering on the cyclists as they ride to create a world free of multiple sclerosis.”
Bike MS is the largest organized cycling series in the country. Over 100,000 cyclists participate in more than 100 rides across the United States. Unlike a racing event, Bike MS is designed to provide a scenic, challenging ride for both the experienced cyclist and the energetic novice. Bike MS includes fully-stocked rest stops with bike mechanics; support and gear vehicles on the routes with the cyclists in case of mechanical problems; and dinner with live entertainment at the end of the day. The event is complemented by a schedule of community rides throughout the summer.
