May 17: Young Adults Program for People in Their 20's & 30's
Join other young adults who live with MS or are involved in the MS movement for an update on MS research, information about the physical therapy initiative and a night of networking. Participants will also have a chance to learn more about and join Modern Society, an enthusiastic group of young professionals in the Triangle NC community committed to volunteering their time, talents and energy to promote MS awareness through various volunteer activities and fundraising events.
May 19: African-American Conference - Cary-Raleigh, NC
Join us for our 11th annual conference for African-Americans and their families living with MS entitled "Courage, Strength, Community: Changing the Perception of MS for African-Americans." Our keynote speakers include Dr. Kalina Sanders, from Shands Jacksonville Neuroscience Instittue in Jacksonville, Florida and Tammie Moore, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist from Western Wake Counseling & Psychological Services in Cary, NC.
June 7: Research Night - "Solving the MS Problem: A Role for Vitamin D"
Our speaker is Colleen Hayes, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Hayes will present a D-light-ful story of how vitamin D, provides protection again MS relapses and disease progression, and may also have an important role in preventing MS in individuals who are at risk of developing this neurodegenerative disease. She'll review the scientific foundation for vitamin D - MS hypothesis, present an update on new research and briefly describe her lab's research on how the vitamin D hormone acts to eliminate autoimmune T lymphocytes. Lastly she will mention the many benefits of vitamin D beyond its benefits in MS and provide guidance for people living with MS and physicians interested in using supplementary vitamin D for the well-being of patients and their families.
June 9: Asheville MS Research Program
Learn about "An Update on the Burgeoning Pipeline of MS Therapeutics" from Claire Gordy who recently completed her Ph.D. from the Department of Immunology at Duke University.
June 11: 6 Week Telephone Support Group
The Greater Carolinas Chapter of the National MS Society is pleased to offer a 6 week telephone support group for people living with MS beginning on Monday, June 11th. The group will meet at 10 a.m. for 6 consecutive weeks concluding on Monday, July 16th. Our facilitator will be Heather Brewer, LCSW. Please note that space is limited to 12 participants and pre-registration is required.
June 12: Health Insurance Reform: Implications for People Living with MS Teleconference
Participants on this call will hear an update on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act from National MS Society staf actively monitoring the key provisions of importance within the MS community. Major points will include: changes to employer based health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid as well as the timeline for implementation and status of legal challenges to the law.

Learn about "An Update on the Burgeoning Pipeline of MS Therapeutics" from Dr. Robert A. Yapundich who is in private practice with Neurology Associates in Hickory, NC.
July 10: Multi Tasking: Living with MS While Parenting Young Children teleconference
Parenting wasn't easy before MS: learn tools on how to balance parenting young children while managing your MS. Explore the concept of mindfulness in parenting and living with MS to embrace both roles.
