Newport Associates Development Company Helping to Create a World Free of Multiple Sclerosis

New Walk MS Site Will Launch at Newport’s Market Oval

JERSEY CITY, N.J.  – The New Jersey Metro Chapter of the National MS Society has joined with Newport Associates Development Company to offer a scenic new launch site for its 2009 annual Walk MS fundraiser, which kicks off this April 19, with approximately 1,200 on-site participants.

The Walk MS event at Newport’s mixed-use community, located on Jersey City’s Hudson River waterfront, will begin in the Market Oval of this vast development, which consists of retail, residential, office, leisure and entertainment facilities.

“Newport has embraced the cause of multiple sclerosis and is sounding the call for the Hudson County community to register for this important event. We are grateful for its willingness to host the many participants who will march toward a cure for MS,” said Gina Murdoch, Vice President of Special Events for New Jersey Metro Chapter.

Walk MS 2009 is anticipating a total of approximately 10,000 walkers across the 15 different walk sites in New Jersey. This year’s event will be one of New Jersey’s largest, most widespread days of walking!

Funds Raised Go to Research and Treatment
Every hour, someone is diagnosed with MS; a chronic disease of the central nervous system for which there is no cure. MS interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and stops people from moving. More than 13,000 people are diagnosed with MS in New Jersey alone, with over 400,000 people nationwide. Funds raised from events sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society New Jersey Metro Chapter, such as the Walk MS on April 19, and Bike MS “Coast the Coast” Ride on May 16-17, are reinvested directly into MS research and into New Jersey-based MS programs and services for everyone whose lives are touched by MS. Last year, these two events earned a combined total of more than $2 million for MS research and programs based right here in New Jersey. Whether walking or cycling, the goal is the same – moving towards a world free of MS.
