Disclosure is a complicated issue. We hope this tool has given you the opportunity to explore the many pros and cons to consider when contemplating this decision. Remember, there is no single or simple answer as each situation is unique. If you make the decision to disclose, be certain that this is the best course for you, as you cannot take it back. There are risks involved and there is no way to know for sure if your job will be in jeopardy once you disclose. You may experience support, relief and understanding, or face curiosity, rejection, fear, pity, resentment or all of the above.

Whatever your decision, know your rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) as well as your local human rights laws. Familiarize yourself with your company’s time and leave policies as well as short- or long-term disability plan requirements. Knowledge is power and this should help protect you should you decide to disclose. If you anticipate difficulties with your employer yet need to disclose, you may also want to consult with an attorney who specializes in employment law. Also, discussing your decision with someone at your local National MS Society chapter is highly recommended. After weighing all the issues of your particular situation and arming yourself with facts about your rights, whatever your decision will be, it will be one made with thought and knowledge.
