Don't Let the Heat Stop You

Summer beckons us with images of easygoing days. But it's a mix bag. Hot, muggy weather can sap anyone's energy. For people with MS, hot weather often brings additional challenges.

Heat can cause symptoms to appear or make the ones you already have feel worse. It can affect walking, thinking, strength and energy level.

Fortunately, the effects of heat are usually temporary. With hot weather on the way, take time to assess your own sensitivity and review these strategies that can help you ease the effects of heat:

  • Stay in an air-conditioned environment during periods of extreme heat and humidity.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose, "breathe-able" cotton clothing and wide brimmed hats.
  • Drink plenty of water. Icy drinks such as "slurpees" or popsicles can provide temporary relief.
  • Exercise in a cool environment: If you are exercising outside, pick the cooler times of the day, usually early morning or evening. If exercising inside, using air conditioning or a fan can help maintain body temperature at an appropriate level. Spraying yourself with a hand-held spray bottle may also help you keep cool. Also, exercising in a cool pool (recommended temperature 80-84 degrees) is an excellent way to combat heat during physical activity.
  • A cool bath or shower can also help reduce core body temperature following activity or exposure to a hot environment.

So, don't be discouraged by the heat of the summer months. Find the strategies that work best for you and don't let the heat stop you.
