National Volunteer Awards

Each year the National Multiple Sclerosis Society inducts volunteers from across the country in the Volunteer Hall of Fame. Nominations are accepted for the following categories: Advocacy, Fundraising, Health Professional, Programs & Services and Scientific Researcher. Awards are also given for Lifetime Achievement and Volunteer of the Year.

In 2009, three volunteers from the Ohio Buckeye Chapter were inducted into the Volunteer Hall of Fame.

Caroline C. Whitacre, Ph.D. - Scientific Researcher
Dr. Whitacre has been on the forefront of MS research since she was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellow from the National MS Society. Her research at The Ohio State University has focued on the immunology of MS, including new developments in oral tolerance as a treatment strategy. Her research has included an in-depth look at MS as it relates to gender differences and pregnancy. She has also shared her knowledge through numerous presentations and publications.

John A. Simonetti - Fundraising
John has demonstrated his dedication to the MS cause for more than 15 years. He has been on the Chapter's Board of Trustees since 1994, serving as Chair from 2000 to 2002. Over the years, his leadership roles have increased to include service on the National Board of Directors. Through his leadership and his fundraising efforts, primarily with the Bike MS Pedal to the Point Ride, he has generated more the $102,000 to benefit the National MS Society.

Richard M. Ransohoff, M.D. - Health Professional
Dr. Ransohoff has been helping the MS community for more than 25 years. He treats patients with MS and conducts MS-related research at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His involvement with the Society includes serving on the Chapter's Board of Trustees, chairing the Clinical Advisory Committee, and being an active member on several NMSS committees. He is widely published and well known around the country and around the world for his knowledge and expertise.
