Aquatics

Why aquatics?

Studies show exercise not only improves your overall health and well-being, but also helps manage many MS symptoms. Move forward through exercise and find an exercise program in your community or become an expert in using a healthy lifestyle to help manage MS. Aquatics is one form of therapeutic exercise available to people with MS.

Join the fun!

Everyone can participate in an aquatics class. You don’t need to know how to swim – only the desire to improve yourself, have fun, and make friends.

  • Buoyancy reduces your body weight, meaning less stress on your joints!
  • Better cardiovascular fitness is gained using the resistance of the water!
  • Water keeps you cool and guards against fatigue, so you can exercise longer!
  • Programs are offered in the community with instructors who are knowledgeable about MS and related disabilities. Check for an aquatic site near you!

Before jumping in, always ask these questions of the aquatic site:

  • Is the facility accessible for someone who has a disability (i.e. uses a wheelchair, walker, etc.)?
  • Do you have accessible parking available?
  • How far would I have to walk from the parking lot to the class location?
  • What is the water temperature (recommended temperature between 80-84 degrees)?
  • How far is it from the locker room to the pool?
