2009 Central PA Scholarship Recipients Recognized
Alana Bingeman
Alana graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School. She played tennis and soccer, appeared in drama productions, was the Vice President of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and a senior mentor and member of the dance team at her church. Alana's mother has MS and Alana "admires her mother's strength and positive mindset." She plans to earn a degree in Business Marketing and to own her own business.
Heather Chaffee
Heather graduated from Oswayo Valley High School. She was the captain of the basketball team, the "Best Jumper" on the track team, and a member of the cross country team. She was also a Student Representative to the Student Council and Peer Tutor. Heather's mother has MS, and after watching her mother struggle, Heather decided to become a nurse to "comfort people when they believe all hope is gone." She will attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, which is close to home so she can be with her mother, and aspires to be a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Alyssa Ecker
Alyssa Ecker graduated from Scranton High School. She was an active member of the Drama Club, Student Council, Spanish Club and school plays. Alyssa's father has MS and she hopes to make her dad and mom proud by attending college to obtain a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and a degree in Criminal Law.
Matthew Lewis
Matthew graduated from Elkand Area High School. He was an Eagle Scout, Patrol Leader for his Boy Scout Troop, President and Outstanding Member of the Student Council. Matthew also won the Sportsmanship Award for both basketball and soccer. Matthew's mother has MS, and Matthew says that his mom never misses a ball game, school function or scout event. He is interested in computers and plans to study Computer Information Systems at Mansfield University.
Samantha Stambaugh
Samantha graduated from York Suburban High School, where she was the JV Captain of the softball team. Samantha has MS, which has made "running from base to base harder," but has also made her a stronger person. Her goal is to study accounting, work as an accountant, raise a family and "not let MS affect her life too much."
Justine Stanton
Justine graduated from Trinity High School. She was an All-Team Varsity softball player and team captain, Treasurer of the National Honor Society, and also volunteered with the Special Olympics and the local National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Justine's mom has MS and Justine admires her heroism and strength and hopes to grow up to be "half the person she is." Justine will pursue a future in Accounting and Finance and aspires to teach both topics one day.
Clayton Weber
Clayton graduated from Big Spring High School. He earned Varsity letters in cross country and track and field, was a Patrol Leader of his Boy Scout Troop, and Treasurer and Vice President of the 4-H Dairy Club. Clayton was also active in the National Honor Society and his church's youth group. Clayton's mom has MS and Clayton believes that working with his family to help his mother taught him "to work well with other people to strive for a common goal." He hopes to study Animal Science at Penn State University and become a large animal veterinarian.
