Beat the Heat

As summer approaches and temperatures rise, it's important for people living with MS to take extra steps to beat the heat. Many people with MS experience a temporary worsening of their symptoms when the weather is very hot or humid.

Here are a few tips to stay cool this summer:

  • Use cooling products like vests, neck wraps, or bandanas
  • Drink cool water or enjoy icy treats such as popsicles or slurpees
  • Use oscillating fans or hand-held spray bottles, especially when exercising
  • Stay in an air-conditioned environment during periods of extreme heat and humidity (utility companies often offer a medical discount program for additional air-conditioner use with a document from your physician)
  • Exercise in a cool pool (80-84 degrees)

The Greater Delaware Valley Chapter runs an air-conditioner exchange program during the summer months. Contact Barbara Marriott if you need an air conditioner or have one to donate.
