Health Insurance Volunteer

Position Overview
The health insurance volunteers will assist in the management of the Health Insurance Initiative Project (HIIP). The volunteer will oversee the creation and management of the HIIP Web site, assist clients with their health insurance appeals and research and write policy papers on health insurance-related issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Insure information on HIIP website is accurate and up to date
  • Develop client education materials on health insurance appeals
  • Assist clients in health insurance appeals
  • Research and write policy papers on health insurance related legislation

Initial Impact:
The impact of this position will be to educate people about navigating their health insurance and helping them gain access to necessary services through appeal assistance and advocacy.

Sustained Outcome:
This position will help in grassroots efforts to affect change in health insurance-related issues in the public policy arena.

Training:
Training will be provided by chapter staff. Training opportunities in the community and online also will be available.

Support:
The volunteer will be supported by the chapter staff in the services department. Supervisory check-in meetings will take place once a week.

Commitment:
This is an ongoing position. Training and orientation will take at least two months. Work can be done at home, but the position does require chapter staff support, so it is preferred that the person be able to come into the office on a regular basis.

  • Generally knowledgeable about health insurance
  • Enthusiastic
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Dependable
