Celebrate MS Awareness Week – March 2-8
State House Event, MS Gala, Wear Orange, & Much More!

Feb. 5, 2009, Warwick, R.I. - MS Awareness Week is March 2-8, 2009, and we’ll be celebrating in Rhode Island with a slate of fun and festive events, including the MS Gala at Providence Piers.

“There are fun and easy activities throughout the week that will make you feel good while you do good,” said National Multiple Sclerosis Society R.I. Chapter President Kathy Mechnig.

On March 4 at 3 p.m., everyone is invited to the State House for a March Forth! MS Awareness Week event with R.I. author Laura Backman and Lemon, the real-life star of the children’s book Lemon the Duck, which is about accepting disabilities. Backman is donating part of the proceeds from Lemon the Duck to the Chapter and she will be reading to a group of children. The Chapter will honor volunteers of the year, Mechnig will read a State of MS address, and Gov. Donald L. Carcieri has been invited to read a proclamation. That evening, the State House dome will be lit in orange.

Thursday, March 5, will be donor recognition day with a reception honoring donors who have informed the Society of their intention to help create a better future for the MS community through their will, trust, or estate plan.

Other events include:
• Team Captains Day on Monday, March 2
• MS Film Festival on Tuesday, March 3, at Miriam Hospital’s Hurvitz Boardroom
• Fundraiser night on Thursday, March 5, at Meritage in East Greenwich and Chardonnay’s in Seekonk, Mass. Fifteen percent of the food and beverage purchased by supporters will be donated to the Chapter.
• Wear Orange Day on Friday, March 6
• MS Gala on Saturday, March 7, at the stunning Providence Piers.

About Multiple Sclerosis
MS interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the United States and 2.5 million worldwide.
