FAST FACTS ABOUT THE NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY,
BLUE RIDGE CHAPTER

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs; or severe – paralysis or loss of vision.
Most people are diagnosed with MS between the ages of 20 and 50.
The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are giving hope to those affected by the disease.
Since our founding in 1946, the mission of the National MS Society has been to end the devastating effects of MS.
The National MS Society funds more MS research, offers more services for people with MS and their families, and provides more professional education programs than any other MS organization in the world.
The National MS Society meets the standards of all the major agencies that rate the fiscal responsibility of non-profits.
The Blue Ridge Chapter serves 3,000 people with MS and their families who live in 51 counties of northwestern, central, and southwestern Virginia.
