Exercise is Medicine! Find out why.
“Exercise is Medicine”
Dear Friends, please read the above statement again. Sometimes we don’t think of physical activity in this way, but according to the American College of Sports Medicine, this is how we should consider exercise. Dr. Ted Brown, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the MS Center at Evergreen HealthCare, claims that “Exercise is the one thing that people with MS can do to increase their functionality.” What a significant and empowering statement this is! This statement is telling us that we have the ability to improve our physical functioning (energy level, coordination, balance, bladder and bowl functioning, flexibility, mobility and even mood) simply through regular exercise. Now, you may be wondering where to go to exercise, or how to start a workout routine…and that’s where we come in!
The Greater Washington Chapter of the National MS Society offers many different exercise programs throughout our Chapter region which provide people with MS the opportunity to participate in a therapeutic recreational activity while gaining physical, emotional and social benefits. All our classes are taught by an MS-trained instructor, are accessible, and the majority are free for people living with MS. Participants are given individual attention and instruction, based on their physical ability and comfort level. Options include yoga, aquatics, dance and gym memberships. Check out our exercise programs today to get yourself moving—and have fun while you’re doing it!
