From the Chair
John Bjornson
Today, amid the worst economy in decades, more and more people with MS will find themselves having to make choices no one should be forced to make. Do I pay the rent or buy groceries? Heat my home or pay the sky-high co-pay on my prescription medication? It was heart-wrenching to read the story in this issue of MS Connection of Jeff and Jean Henning, both of them disabled, unable to work and eventually forced to live in their car. And their situation is typical of more people than we realize.
Fortunately, the Chapter stepped in with temporary financial assistance that helped turn the Hennings’ misfortunes around. Each year, hundreds of individuals and families turn to us for direct assistance to help them with basic needs. In 2009, those numbers will surely grow.
I’m grateful for the loyalty of our donors and event participants who – I’m confident – will continue to support us during these hard times so that we in turn may continue to serve the needs of the MS community. History has shown that people do not stop donating to charitable organizations when money is tight, but they do become more selective in their giving. They seek out organizations that consistently prove their effectiveness and efficiency – organizations just like the National MS Society.
Our Chapter is entering this recession in a solid financial position with the most amazing resources available – our generous community. Not only can we count on sustained financial support from our contributors, but also on an amazing cadre of volunteers. We simply could not do what we do without them.
Finally, we are anticipating one of our best Walk MS seasons ever as people seek out new ways to involve their family and friends in a fun and rewarding event. Walk MS is a great way to re-energize, to support the MS Movement in big ways or small, and to raise awareness in your neighborhoods and workplaces about multiple sclerosis. My wife and three children and I will be part of it. I hope you will be, too.
