(with the original Super Slugs, from left to right: Jordan, Carl, Tadashi, and Katrina)
In September 2009 I was diagnosed with MS. I was determined to raise money for the National MS Society. When I saw that the 2010 Bike MS: Waves to Wine ride was on the anniversary of my diagnosis, I took it as a sign and signed up, even though I didn’t own a bike. I bought a road bike, recruited two friends and formed the Super Slugs.
My main training ride was along the Bay Trail from Berkeley to Richmond. That ride only had two hills, and there were beasts for me. I struggled, but was still able to ride 90 miles in Bike MS that year- with just three months of training! It was a real challenge, but I was glad I did it. Completing that ride inspired me to recruit more friends and family.
I went from a non-rider to thinking a 25-mile ride is “short.” Just only a few years ago, one hill at Golden Gate Fields felt impossible but now I ride up Mt. Diablo and down to Santa Cruz. I’m very proud of myself and how far I have come. People ask for advice on how to train and I tell them, “Just ride. Make it fun and try to get one hill in there somewhere.” If I did it, anyone can.
