Historically, MS has been viewed as an adult-onset disease. However, it is also diagnosed in children and teens. It is estimated that at least 8,000 - 10,000 children and teens nationally have MS and another 10,000 - 15,000 are experiencing what may be MS symptoms.
The chapter offers an annual “We Get MS Too” program for kids and teens living with MS and their families. Thank you to everyone who attended “We Get MS Too” on September 15, 2012, which included a discussion on staying physically active and a fun-filled afternoon of magical sports with the University of Maryland Quidditch team!
The chapter is excited to host a weekend retreat for families with a child or teen with multiple sclerosis or related condition from June 28-30, 2013, at Meadowkirk Retreat and Conference Center. Meadowkirk is situated on 358 acres amidst the beautiful farms of historic Middleburg, VA, approximately one hour west of Washington, D.C. The retreat activities will include a challenge course, swimming, nature trails, campfires, and more! Pediatric MS specialists and National MS Society staff will lead breakout sessions and discussion groups for kids and teens with MS, parents, and siblings. There is no cost to attend, due to generous support from Fox Rothschild LLP. To reserve your spot or for more information, contact Julie Vallelunga at Julie.vallelunga@nmss.org or 202-375-5608.
