Being well involves finding time both to exercise and to enjoy leisure activities. The chapter can help you identify ways to accomplish both of these goals.

Exercise

We encourage you to take advantage of different exercise classes throughout the Washington metro area. Exercise is one of the best strategies for optimizing health and quality of life regardless of your ability level. We can also assist you in locating and accessing exercise classes in your community that are appropriate for people with MS.

 Some of the benefits of participating in an exercise program may include:

  • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Increased strength and endurance
  • Improved balance
  • Better bladder and bowel function
  • Less fatigue and depression
  • Overall feeling of well-being
  • Management of stress

Limited financial assistance for Society sponsored health and wellness classes are available. For a financial assistance application, please call (202) 296-5363. You may also contact the Recreation Center where classes are being held for scholarship information.

We recommend you consult with your physician before participating in any exercise program.

Recreation

The chapter offers people with MS, their families, and their friends recreation days that include both education and relaxation. Please visit our Programs Calendar to find out about upcoming recreation opportunities.
