The newly diagnosed should call the Infomation Resource Center to get on the Chapter's mailing list and be assured of receiving timely information about appropriate services and educational programs. (You can also register by logging in to the Chapter website and creating an account.)
For those with specific or advanced needs, there are two main Information Resource Center services to know about:
The Service Navigator
The Information Resource Center's Service Navigator specialists help people with MS maintain independent living, improve their quality of life, and navigate through difficult situations involving healthcare bureaucracy or crises involving MS. Ask for a Service Navigator specialist if you need help:
- Coordinating resources and finding your way through complex health insurance or government benefits issues
- Learning how to advocate for yourself in the benefit, employment, and healthcare systems
- Discussing employment options and issues
- Identifying local community resources that could benefit your quality of life.
Service Navigator specialists can also provide crisis interventions and, when necessary, connect you with Case Management.
Case Management
The Information Resource Center's Case Managers assist people with complex needs related to MS (such as those living with progressive MS or who are dually diagnosed with MS and a mental health disorder.) A case manager can develop a plan of action, coordinate among multiple professionals and agencies, advocate on your behalf, and document important activities.
For more information about these and many other services, call the Information Resource Center at 1.800.344.4867. And be sure to browse the rest of the Chapter website, too!
