The Mid America Chapter coordinates over 50 self-help groups across Kansas, Western Missouri, Nebraska and Pottawattamie County. Self-help groups provide lively discussions, valuable information to help you cope with the challenges of MS, and a place to share your story and be inspired. The group experience helps members become more empowered to cope with the challenges of their MS in a supportive and confidential environment. Groups usually meet on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. Most groups have a consistent week, day and time they meet each month as well as a set location.
Leadership
Mid America Chapter self-help groups are facilitated by trained volunteers with personal experiences with MS who are committed to helping others.
The Chapter supports self-help groups by providing the initial orientation and ongoing training to leaders and co-leaders. Leaders receive regular research and program updates, as well as a chapter newsletter with program ideas, updates and tips for running meetings. Additionally, a chapter staff liaison works with each group to develop topics and activities and maintain monthly contact with the leader. Staff liaisons also visit the group annually.
