External Media Resource Specialist

Volunteer Job Description

Reports to:     Director, Community Program
Location:    Chapter wide
Position Summary:   Identify and engage media outlets in specified Chapter area in order to better market the NMSS, Chapter Programs, Services and Advocacy. Create a viable system to be utilized in Program and Outreach efforts.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Maintain knowledge of MS, NMSS and local Chapter activities
  • Become knowledgeable about NMSS programs and activities
  • Serve as liaison for the National Multiple Society and our mission

Community engagement activities

  • Identify local media outlets (Cable, print, radio) that reach out to our target audiences and would be most receptive to engaging with the Chapter
  • Develop a database of contacts at local media outlets who can help promote and market the programs & activities in their area. Include religious organizations, hospitals, and community service groups
  • Identify the procedures for getting program information into newspaper and calendar listings as well as PSAs
  • Research opportunities to educate about MS and the programs & services of the NMSS.
  • Develop newsworthy story idea that can be coupled with a program opportunity. Examples are:  results for a state or local MS study, a local person who has overcome obstacles to live well with MS, a grant received by our chapter

Qualifications:

  • Excellent telephone/written communication skills
  • Professional, friendly, and creative
  • Prepared to speak with reporters and editors about your story
  • Willingness and ability to learn and effectively communicate about MS and the NMSS.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office 2003 or compatible software, internet use
  • Must have own transportation if working from a Chapter office
  • Must have own internet access if working from home

Training/Orientation Provided:

  • Training about NMSS & MS
  • Training on programs and services of the organization
  • Ongoing support provided by staff liaison to keep Specialist updated

Support:

  • Provide dedicated computer/notebook
  • Bi-monthly meetings with staff in person or by phone as needed

Time Commitment:

  • 2-5 hours weekly, maximum 20 hours per month
  • Work can be done at Chapter office or at home as convenient and cost effective
  • Minimum one year project commitment

Impact:

  • Utilization of media relation skills to increase awareness of MS and the programs and services of the NMSS
  • Expand access of programs & services to people not currently aware of the Society
  • Increase Chapter capacity to partner with media outlets to improve the visibility of programs and services that improve the quality of life for people with MS

Sustained Outcomes:

  • Increased awareness of  MS & the NMSS
  • Improve the quality of life for those affected by MS
