Volunteer Job Description

Reports to:     Director, Chapter Services
Location:    Waltham; can work from home
Position Summary:   This position is responsible for investigating and documenting community resources to help people with MS live safely and independently in the community with the highest possible quality of life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify community resources throughout the chapter area that can help people with MS
  • Contact resources to let them know about the programs and services of the Society, and to obtain comprehensive information about their offerings, products and services
  • Educate chapter programs staff members about new resources
  • Enter new resources and update existing resources in the chapter’s database, Altair

Initial Impact: 

The 350 people who contact the chapter each month will have the benefit of vital, up-to-date information about relevant and helpful public and private resources

Sustained Outcomes:

  • People with MS will enjoy greater safety, independence and a higher quality of life because they will understand have access to necessary services and benefits
  • The intern will be educated about he mission and strategic initiatives of the National MS Society. S/he will receive training about multiple sclerosis, and the programs and services of the Central New England Chapter. S/he will have the opportunity to attend staff meetings, national teletrainings and other educational venues within the chapter. The intern will receive comprehensive training about the NMSS referrals categories, and relevant public and private services, products and benefit programs.

Support: 

The intern will receive education and support from each member of the Direct Services staff. S/he will meet weekly with the Chapter Services Director for training, mentoring and support.

Commitment: 

July and August. 15 hours per week; 60 hours total. Work can be done at the Chapter headquarters in Waltham and at home

Qualifications:

  • Ability to think creatively and to explore resources of value to the MS population
  • Ability to communicate effectively over the phone and to interact professionally with community organizations, chapter staff and other volunteers
  • Ability to analyze data and identify trends
  • Strong attention to detail, and ability to enter data accurately
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft applications, the Internet and ability to learn the chapter’s database, Altair
